The society as a whole has changed- I don't know if people still have 'hope' for Billie Joe because of divorce rates or whatever, but back then being married was a death sentence for a group.
Anyway, on the subject of John's popularity, Paul was much 'cuter'. And women had less rights, and it was just...different.
